Texas Author Series: Dr. Tom Hutton on "Carrying the Black Bag: A Neurologist's Bedside Tales"

The Texas Author Series of free author talks kicks off at your library with Dr. Tom Hutton, who will be discussing his collection of stories.  Hutton taught at the Texas Tech School of Medicine before retiring to his ranch near Fredericksburg, and he'll be on hand to discuss his book, answer questions, and participate in a book signing as copies will be available for sale.  Bring your lunch, or purchase one from the Friends of the Library for $5, drinks provided.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Abilene Public Library ans supported by a grant from the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, HeARTS for the ARTS, the Abilene Arts Alliance, the City of Abilene, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. 

Tween Time: DIY Candle Holders

Teens are invited to gear up for some crafting fun at the library as we'll be hosing a crafting workshop for youth ages 8-15.  This month, we'll supply all the materials needed to show you how to make your own Candle Holders.  There's no need to register, so come out and make one in this evening event. 

Teen Time: Minecraft Party

We're going to be having some Minecraft fun at the library!  We're pulling out our mobile laptops and setting up this afternoon gaming session where teens can play in 30-minute increments to test their skills on the new Minecraft gaming we've acquired.  While you're waiting to play, we'll also offer some Minecraft inspired crafts for you to make.  So come learn how to play, show off your skills, and have fun. 

Make & Take: Leprechaun Hats

It's all about leprechauns at the next afternoon crafting session for youth as we'll be showing kids of all ages how to make their own Leprechaun Hats.  We'll supply all the materials needed to make your own as we draw nearer to St. Patrick's Day.  Don't miss this fun after school activity at your library. 

Teen Time: Pizza & Games

Teens are invited out to our monthly social hour at the library where you can join your peers, after school, and enjoy pizza (on us) while also playing some traditional games that change out each month.  Take a load off from school and come hang out with your friends, while making new ones.  There's no need to register. 

Illumination Celebration @ Your Library

Your library is joining in on the celebration in Downtown Abilene, as the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council hosts an Illumination Event, lighting up the sculptures around Abilene as we are the Storybook Sculpture Capital of Texas.  While you're out enjoying the festivities, which will include food trucks, costumed characters, scavenger hunts, and more, kids can also stop by the library as we'll be making snowflakes to celebrate our own Jack Frost statue outside the library. 

Simply Human Living: Behaviors to Induce Health & Longevity

Join us as we invite in Mark Rogers (certified strength and conditioning specialist and owner of Simply Human, LLC) as he shares tips and strategies on achieving vitality and longevity through the four pillars of healthy living - eating, sleeping, moving, and stress management.  He's here to show you that there's no magic pill for success, it's a lifestyle change.  Come learn about his philosophy at your library, and ask questions too. 

Free Tax Assistance

The public is welcome to take advantage of this free service, led by IRS-trained volunteers with the AARP, who will help you e-File your taxes for free at your library.  Slots fill up fast, so be sure to arrive early, and everyone will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.  Be sure to bring your tax materials including your Photo ID, W-2s, Social Security cards, etc., and multiple sessions will be hosted through Apr. 15. 

Lego My Library (Lego Club)

If you're between the ages of 8-18, don't miss out on being part of our monthly Lego Club at the library.  Each month we'll meet up in the library and work on a variety of projects based on themes or even free design.  You never know what creations might arise from each club session, but we always have a blast each time.  Work on a project solo, or join up as a team, and let's see what you'll be able to make. 

Super Storytime: Dr. Seuss

March is THE month for Dr. Seuss and we'll be celebrating with his classic stories.  Kids are invited out to this special event where we'll be celebrating all things Seuss-related with stories, songs, crafts, and more.  Don't miss out on this great morning activity for kids and parents to enjoy. 

Collecting Commas Writing Club

If you're between the ages of 10-17, and you love to write, you'll want to be a part of our weekly writing club at your library.  Join your peers as we work on a variety of writing activities to help you hone your creative writing skills in all areas.  There's no need to register, just come out and give it a shot. 

Resumes 101: A Hands-On Class

Adults are invited to register for a free workshop at your library where staff will help you create a resume in real-time.  This course will last an hour and everyone will have a PC to work on.  To participate, you will need your job history information and a personal email address and we'll handle the rest.  For more information, contact us at 325-437-7323...hopefully there are still a few slots left available.
