The whole library is ramping up preparations for our third annual Lib-Con extravaganza May 2-7, so if you want to get in on the geeky fun, check out some of these great books.
For all the girls, women, ladies, people of the feminine persuasion out there, we have The Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy: A Handbook for Geek Girls by Sam Maggs. This book is chock full of geek culture, from gaming cheat codes to fanfic to cosplay tips. Even better, the author provides a feminist take on the often male-dominated world of nerdy fandom. You can grab a copy at each of the Abilene Public Library's three locations or download a digital eBook from the OverDrive app!
Interested in learning more about the history of cosplay? Check out Cosplay Girls 2: Japan's Live Animation Heroines to find out more about the cosplay culture in Japan. This book also includes galleries of cosplay photographs that could spark ideas for your own costume! You can find copies at South Branch and Mockingbird Branch, or place a hold and have it sent to the Main Library for you to pickup!
Need more ideas for cosplay costumes? Planning to enter our Cosplay Contest at Lib-Con this year? You may want to browse through this book: 1000 Incredible Costume & Cosplay Ideas: A Showcase of Creative Characters from Anime, Manga, Video Games, Movies, Comics and More! by Yaya Han, Allison DeBlasio & Joey Marsocci a.k.a. Dr. Grymm. I believe the title says it all! We have copies at all library locations, so visit the one nearest you to grab this book before someone else does!
This year could be the first time you have ever tried cosplay. Don't worry! The Abilene Public Library has copies of How to Cosplay: Catgirls and Other Critters by Gerry Poulos at all three locations. This book covers everything from how to create and customize your costume, to participating in a cosplay competition. Included at the end of the book is a list of resources for more information. Have fun!
Want to take your costume one step further? Try some of the techniques you'll learn in Extreme Costume Makeup: 25 Creepy & Cool Step-by-Step Demos by Brian & Nick Wolfe. These two world-renowned special effects artists will teach you how to transform everyday faces into demons, zombies, vampires and more! Copies of this book are available at all three locations of the Abilene Public Library. Get your copy, and then come check out the Face-Off contest during Lib-Con!
