Monday Morning Movies

The general adult audience is invited to join us for the next session of the Monday Morning Movies program this summer, where we’re showing hit movies from the present and past for the community to enjoy.  For this session, we’ll be showing the fantasy romance flick from 1980 titled “Somewhere in Time” starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer.  In this film, a Chicago playwright uses self-hypnosis to find the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel.  This film is rated PG and runs in at 1 hour and 43 minutes.  For more information about this program, feel free to contact Marie Skufca at 325-676-6025.

Science Club

PH: 325-676-6067We may be on a break from school, but that doesn’t mean the fun of learning has to stop at your library.  Youth (ages 8+) are invited to come out to attend our monthly Science Club session where we get hands-on with teaching youth about science concepts before then getting hands-on with them in fun (and safe) experiments at your library.  We’ll supply all the materials that you’ll need and there’s no need to register to be a part of the club.  Simply show up ready to learn and to have a little fun.  For additional information about this program, feel free to contact Amanda Sasser at 325-6]76-6067.

Make & Take: Hatching Dinosaur Eggs

Hosted at a new time this summer (a little earlier in the evening and right after Science Club lets out) we’re hosting the next session of the Make & Take crafting program at your library.  For this event, we’ll be “Hatching Dinosaur Eggs.”  Of course they won’t be real dino eggs, but we’ll be having fun with them through making our own to hatch from a selection of our craft supplies and materials.  They’ll be super cute and tie right into the theme for the Summer Reading Club this year.  We’ll supply all the materials needed, and if you have any additional questions, feel free to contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.

If you’re looking for a great movie night at your library for the entire family to enjoy, you’re in luck.  Don’t pass up on your chance to attend this event as we’re showing the live-action adaptation of the Disney classic “Cinderella” starring Lily James, Cate Blanchett, and Richard Madden, released 2015.  In this film, when her father unexpectedly passes away, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her scheming step-sisters.  Never one to give up hope, Ella’s fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger.  This film is rated PG and runs in at 1 hour and 45 minutes.  For more information about this movie night, feel free to contact Anne Ellis at 325-437-7323.

Young Audiences featuring Joe McDermott

It’s time for the Young Audiences of Abilene summer series at your library, as a great and interactive series of events for local youth in the community to come out and enjoy.  Our first session will feature singer/songwriter Joe McDermott who has composed soundtracks for video games and specializes in music for children.  He’ll be at the library to deliver his high-energy, Austin-style pop sound with youth in an event that will certainly get kids involved and having a great time.  For more information about this program, visit our Young Audiences Page online or contact us at 325-676-6067.  This series of events is made possible thanks to The Greathouse Foundation, HeARTS for the ARTS, Rotary Club of Abilene, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the Friends of the Abilene Public Library.

Make & Take: Dinosaur Masks

Kids of all ages are invited out to our next Make & Take crafting session at the library where we’ll be getting hands-on with some fun projects for the afternoon.  For this session, we’ll be showing youth how to make some Dinosaur Masks, to go right along with the theme for the Summer Reading Clubs this year.  Dinosaurs are cool…dinosaurs are awesome…and we’re hoping to turn you into one this afternoon.  All materials will be supplied for you, and for additional information about this summer craft event, feel free to contact Shelbie Fowler at 325-698-7565.

Tween & Teen Coloring Club

Teen Book Club: “Thief of Lies”

Teens won’t want to miss coming out to our monthly book club meeting at your South Branch Library, where we focus on reading popular current YA reads.  For this session, we’ll be discussing the book “Thief of Lies” by Brenda Drake, the first book in the Library Jumper Series following a girl who learns about her magical heritage and preordained fate.  Look for a copy of this title at your library, read it, and then come ready to discuss with other avid teen readers in the community.  We’re all about promoting great literature at your Abilene Public Library, so come join in on the reading fun during the summer.  For additional information about this event, feel free to contact Marianne Vadney at 325-698-7565.

Stories in the Park: What Pet to Get?

Collecting Commas Writing Club

Members Only: The Friends of the Abilene Public Library are hosting their annual Book Sale, now in its 27th year.  Always a highly anticipated event, it only comes around once a year, so don't miss your chance to get your hands on a wide selection of books, movies, music, and more at amazing deals.  The first night of the sale will be open to current members of the Friends of the Library, where those in attendance will get the first crack at this year's sale.  If you're not a member, you may purchase a membership the night of this sale at the Civic Center.  Just arrive a little early.  For more information about this sale, visit the Book Sale Page online.  All proceeds from the sale go towards benefiting the goals and mission of the Abilene Public Library.

DIY Dinosaur Crafts

We’ve added a new series to your library for the summer at your Main Library, and tying directly into the Summer Reading Club theme this year.  It’s called DIY Dinosaurs where we’ll meet up to have youth create different dinosaur craft projects that will be cute and fun.  We had so many projects we wanted to do this summer, based on the theme of dinosaurs, that we just had to create more programming so we could do them all.  Kids of all ages are invited to come out and make some with us, and we’ll supply all the materials you’ll need to make your own.  For more information about this craft workshop, feel free to contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.

Teen Flix After Hours

Teens are invited out to our next Teen Flix After Hours movie night at your South Branch Library, where we watch hit shows with teen appeal.  The second film in this franchise was just release earlier this month, so we’re going back to watch the first film at this session with 2013’s “Now You See Me” starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, and other familiar names.  In this film, an FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.  It’s an awesome visual flick and is rated PG-13 with a run time of 1 hr 55 min.  Snacks and drinks will be provided and rides should arrive for pickup no later than 7:50PM.  For more information about this event, contact Tremain Jackson at 325-698-7565.

Teen Scene After Hours: Who Dun It? Solve the Murder Mystery

We’re offering a new series of programming this summer at your Main Library, and geared just at teens.  It’s called Teen Scene (much like the bi-monthly newsletter we send out to teens who register) and our first session will be a fun Murder Mystery for guests to participate in.  Come out as we set the scene so you can hunt for clues and see if you can use your skills of deduction to find the right suspect.  It’s going to be one fun and interactive program for teens to participate in, so don’t miss out on this event where you’ll become a part of the program.  For additional information about this event, contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.
