Book-To-Film Adaptations: August 2016

Literature often inspires film adaptation and each month I like to highlight those hitting theaters soon.  Check out this blog entry to see what they are, and be on the lookout for seeing them in well as checking out their source material at your library.

Suicide Squad

Summary: A secret government agency run by Amanda Waller, named A.R.G.U.S. creates a task force comprising super villains, the "Suicide Squad."  They are assigned to execute dangerous tasks in exchange for shorter prison sentences.

Pete's Dragon
Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard
Release Date: Aug. 12
Based On: "Pete's Dragon"
Author: Malcolm Marmorstein
Summary: In its first live action adaptation, this film follows the adventures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon.

Author: Lew Wallace
Summary: A falsely accused Jewish nobleman survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his Roman best friend, who betrayed him.

War Dogs
Starring: Miles Teller
Release Date: Aug. 19
Based On: "Arms and the Dudes"
Author: Guy Lawson
Summary: Two friends in their early 20s living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts.  Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life.  But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military - a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.  Based on true events.
