Jean Johnson has written the tales of eight cursed, magical brothers, the prophecy that binds them and how it all turns out. The Curse of the Eight prophecy concerns four sets of twins; each born two years apart. The prophecy, also known as the Song of the Sons of Destiny, consists of eight verses, one verse per brother.
The first story, titled The Sword, takes place on Nightfall Island where the exiled brothers live in an effort to stave off the fulfillment of the prophecy should they fall in love. To stave this off, no women live on or visit the ilsand and merchants - all men - only visit a few times a year from the brothers' homeland of Katan. Saber and his brothers occupy themselves with perfecting their magic and creating things to trade with the merchants. Then Morganen, the youngest, rescues a woman from burning to death in another universe and American Kelly comes to the Island, setting things in motion.
In The Wolf, Wolver's childhood friend escapes from her uncle and makes her way to sanctuary on Nightfall Island with her childhood friends. However, the Island has problems; an unknown mage is sending dangerous magical constructs to the island to kill the brothers.
In Johnson's third title, The Master, Dominor, the third brother, is kidnapped by the visiting Mandarites who in turn lost him to their enemies the Natallians. This title doesn't take place on Nightfall Island, but during this adventure, Dominor meets his match/mate.
Back on Nightfall Island, Evanor, the singing mage, lost his voice in the incident with the Mandarites. His story, told in The Song, matches him with a singing healer.
The next two titles in the series take place simultaneously. They are about the net set of twins and a set of sisters who are cast away on the island. The Cat concerns Trevan and AMara and his reputation as a womanizer, while The Storm deals with night loving Rydan, who guards the secret of Nightfall Island, and Aurora, who also guards a secret. Will their love mean their downfall?
Unlike some of his brothers, Koranen wants to find his match. However, as the title The Flame suggests, he tends to set things on fire, especially when he gets passionate. A desalination plant on Nightfall Island needs repair and a team of aquamancers arrived to work on it. Some of them are women. Will opposites attract?
Finally, it's Morganen's turn and he goes back to the beginning with Kelly's best friend on Earth. Hope caught Morganen's eye and he has been keeping in touch with her between his other meddling. In The Mage Morganen realizes he can fulfill the prophecy and set the brothers free for all time. But, he just needs to figure out how to get Hope to Nightfall Island without creating an imbalance in the universes.
