Science Club

Youth, ages 8+, are invited out to our monthly Science Club session at the library.  Each month we meet up to learn about a new science concept, and then get hands on with experiments and demonstrations to immerse ourselves in what we've learned.  It's the perfect after school activity that allows youth to have fun, while learning too.  There's no registration required to be a part of this club, just come out to our next meeting and be ready to have some fun with library staff.  For more information, contact Amanda Sasser at 325-676-6067.

Make & Take: Bats

If you have a child who loves to craft, you won't want to miss out on joining us for our monthly Make & Take craft session at your Main Library.  Immediately following the monthly Science Club session, youth will have the chance to join us for a fun project where we'll supply all the materials needed to show you how to make your own Bats for Halloween.  They'll be super cute and make for some awesome decorations in your homes.  No registration required, and for additional information, contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.

Mockingbird Movies

The community is invited to join us for a free evening movie night at your library where we'll be showing 2015's "Spare Parts" starring George Lopez and Jamie Lee Curtis, and based on the Wired Magazine article "La Vida Robot."  In this film, four Hispanic high school students form a robotics club.  With no experience, 800 bucks, used car parts and a dream, this rag tag team goes up against the country's reigning robotics champion, MIT.  This film is rated PG-13 for some language and violence, and runs in at 1 hour and 54 minutes.  Don't miss out on this great movie event at your library, and for additional information, feel free to contact Anne Ellis at 325-437-7323.

Minecraft Mania

Youth and teens, ages 8-18, are invited out to this monthly after school gaming event that's centered around MINECRAFT!!!  Popular with youth nationwide, guests will have the chance to come out and play on our mobile laptop stations throughout the afternoon in the library.  For those waiting to play, we'll also offer some Minecraft-inspired craft options as well.  There's no need to register for this evening, and when you arrive, everyone who wants a turn will have the opportunity to play.  Don't miss out on this popular series at your library, and for additional information, feel free to contact Luke Terrill at 325-437-7323.

Teen Read Week: Book Bags

Teen Read Week runs Oct. 9-15, and it's a national literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (a division of the American Library Association) as a way to encourage teens to be readers and regular library users.  We'll be celebrating at your Main Library with a fun craft workshop where we'll supply all the materials needed to show you how to personalize your own book bag...perfect for trucking home those great reads you find at the library.  No registration is needed, some come out and be ready to have a little fun with crafts at this event.  For additional information, contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.

Lego My Library

If you're between the ages of 8-18, and you have a creative mind with a passion for building, you should certainly be a part of the Lego Club @ Your Library.  This after school event is perfect for letting your creativity soar as we'll supply you with a sea of Legos and building platforms and just set you loose to build whatever you like.  Sometimes we'll build based on a monthly theme, and other times we'll free design.  Whether you wish to work on a project solo, or team up with others for a joint project, just come out ready to have some building fun at your library.  For additional information, contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.

Super Storytime: Spiders

Kids of all ages, and parents too, are invited to join the Mockingbird Branch for our monthly Super Storytime event.  As we get closer to Halloween, things will start to get a little creepy (but in a not-so-scary way) with this month's theme that will be all about SPIDERS!  Join us as we share some great stories including "Aaaarrgghh! Collecting Commas Writing Club

If you have a child between the ages of 10-17, and they love to express themselves through writing, don't miss out on the chance to be a part of the weekly Collecting Commas Writing Club at your Main Library.  Meeting every Thursday afternoon at 4:00PM, this group meets to hone their creative writing skills in all form of writing including novels, short stories, poetry, and more.  Plus, we make writing fun by engaging in a host of fun activities to help inspire ideas and participation among participants.  There's no need to register to be a part of this club, simply come check out a meeting and see if it's meant for you.  For more information about this weekly program, contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.

Did you know your Abilene Public Library offers a great lineup of digital services available to all library cardholders for free?  One of the ways you can use them is to checkout and download eBooks for use on PCs, tablets, and smartphones.  If you need help on getting started, we invite you to make use of this program that will be offered every Friday in October.  Call 325-437-7323 and schedule a time for come in and allow staff to show you how to get started with using the OverDrive, the most popular digital service in our lineup. 

Teen Scene After Hours

The numbers are growing with teens participating in the popular after hours programming at the library, so don't miss out on this next one.  We'll be celebrating all things scary and creepy with games (cooperative, party, and those with a terrifying twist), making creepy crafts, socializing, and having fun.  Plus, you're also invited to come out in costume as well...but please note it's not required.  All teens wishing to participate should be at the library before we close at 6:00PM.  Once the doors lock to the public, the library will become our playground (of sorts) at this event.  Rides should return for pickup by 7:30PM, with all teens being picked up no later than 7:45PM.  For more information about this event, contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.

Family Flix

Kids and parents are encouraged to join us for another great afternoon movie showing at your library as we get closer to Halloween.  We'll be showing 2015's "Goosebumps," starring Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, and Odeya Rush, and based on the popular series by R.L. Stine.  In this film, a teenager teams up with the daughter of young adult horror author R.L. Stine after the writer's imaginary demons are set free on the town of Madison, Delaware from walking puppets to werewolves.  This film is rated PG for scary and intense creature action and images, and for some rude humor, and runs in at 1 hour and 43 minutes.  Don't miss out on this great flick, and for additional information, contact Kelsie Wade at 325-676-6067.
