"Author to Try: Ilona Andrews" | @ the Library Article

Ilona Andrews is actually the writing team of Andrew Gordon and Ilona Gordon.  Ilona was born in Russia and moved to the U.S. as a teen.  She met Andrew Gordon in college.  According to Ilona they met in English Composition 101 where she got a better grade.  She calls him "Gordon" because as an ex-military man, he is most accustomed to that.  They live here in Texas with their two daughters.

As a team they write mostly urban fantasy with some romance.  They have been writing together since they published the first Kate Daniels novel Magic Bites in 2007.  This successful urban fantasy series is up to nine full-length novels with a tenth novel upcoming.  There are also a number of novellas and a novel in Kate Daniels' world.

The four books of "The Edge Series" were written in between the Kate Daniels books.  According to Ilona Andrews' website, the Edge "lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale - and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny."  Gordon calls it "rustic fantasy" as opposed to urban fantasy.  The Edge books are generally unclassifiable to a particular genre.

Ilona Andrews' current work is on the three novels of the "Hidden Legacy Series."  The first novel in the series, Burn for Me, was released in 2014.  The second will be released June 2017.  It is currently in the middle of the publishing process.  The third book, title unknown, is scheduled to be released in August 2017 and is currently being written.

For three years, Ilona Andrews has experimented with the serial publishing of a novel per year.  As a gift to their readers, Ilona Andrews writes a scene or two and publishes it each week on their website.  The public is welcome to read it and leave comments, or initiate a discussion of the scene/s or of the book so far.  At least once, the discussion has influenced the inclusion of a previously written snippet, published on Ilona Andrews Blog, as a prologue to the book.  Once the book is complete, it is self-published and made available through various outlets including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iBooks.

Three titles are book in the Inkeeper Chronicles.  The Chronicles report the activities of Dina Demille, her Shih Tzu named Beast, and her rather unusual Victorian bed and breakfast in Red Deer, Texas.  Most people traveling in Texas and stopping at the Gertrude Hunt bed and breakfast for the night would be informed there are no vacancies.  There is one permanent resident, Her Grace Caldenia ka ret Magren.  She enjoys Funyuns and Mello Yello and has taken refuge at Gertrude Hunt in order to stay alive.

The third chronicle, One Fell Sweep, was published in December 2016.  The first two chronicles, Clean Sweep and Sweep in Peace, are available at the Abilene Public Library through OverDrive and Sweep in Peace is available as a printed book.  Try a new author in a new genre to start 2017 from your Abilene Public Library!
