Tech Monday Instruction

We live in a world where access to technology is commonplace. As more people acquire smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices, there can be a learning curve when it comes to being comfortable using them. If you need help learning to use your device, getting started on the library's great lineup of digital services, maneuvering your way through the Internet or Microsoft Office applications, join us for Tech Monday Instruction at your library. Your South Branch librarians will be on hand to help patrons on a first-come, first-served basis in the meeting room.

Mockingbird Movies

The public is invited to join us for a free movie showing at your library, with a remake of a classic film starring Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond.  In this film, an ugly duckling, having undergone a remarkable change, still harbors feelings for her crush.  He just happens to be a carefree playboy.  However, her business-focused brother may have something to say about it first.  This film is rated PG for some mild language and has a run time of 2 hours and 7 minutes. 

Science Club

Youth, ages 8+, are invited out to our monthly Science Club session at the library.  Each month we meet up to learn about a new science concept, and then get hands on with experiments and demonstrations to immerse ourselves in what we've learned.  It's the perfect after school activity that allows youth to have fun, while learning too.  There's no registration required to be a part of this club, just come out to our next meeting and be ready to have some fun with library staff.

Make & Take: I Heart Pigs

We love partnering with other Abilene festivities and organizations, and on this day we're going to help promote the Year of Garth Williams (associated with the Children's Art & Literacy Festival)! For this craft, we'll be making a heart-shaped pig to harken back to Wilbur and Charlotte's Web. Using various shaped paper, we'll help you to create your own adorable pig completely out of hearts! Easy and definitely cute, we'll supply all the materials you'll need.

Our Best Shot: The Importance of Vaccines for Older Adults

LVN Tammy Copeland with the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District will be bringing the latest information on vaccines, possible side effects and how often they should be given, including the High dose flu vaccine compared to the regular flue vaccine, Prevnar 13, Pneumonia 23, Tdap, and Zoster.  Bring your questions for this experienced medical professional during this free program.

Make & Take: Love & Music

February 14th is the day of love and there is no better way to express love than by music. Come and join us at your South Branch Library as we gear up for the next Make & Take craft session at your library. For this session, we'll supply all the materials and instruction needed to show youth how to create their own tambourine crafts. It'll make for some musical fun for everyone.

Free Tax Help

If you need help filing your taxes, take part in this free program led by IRS-trained volunteers with the AARP.  Multiple sessions will be hosted each week, and guests will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis while spaces allow.  Be sure to bring your Photo ID, social security card, W-2’s, and all other tax information you may need to file.  Volunteers will be on hand to walk you through the filing process, and e-File your taxes during your visit.

Minecraft Mania

We want you to be a part of the Minecraft Mania fun at your Abilene Public Library, with multiple sessions hosted at multiple locations!  Designed for tweens and teens (ages 10-19), join us as we dive into the digital world of Minecraft.  We'll provide access to laptops for gamers to play in story mode, while also offering some additional Minecraft-themed activities and crafts to get involved in.  So come on out, bring a friend, and make some new ones at this digital series of events at your library.

Family Fun: Same, Same, But Different

February is a great month for celebrating people...how we're alike, but different.  We're doing just that at the next Family Fun event at your Mockingbird Branch Library.  Kids of all ages, and parents too, are invited to join us for a great after school program where we'll be sharing great stories about friends, while celebrating our differences too.  It's a great way to spend an afternoon at your library.

Collecting Commas Writing Club

If you have a child between the ages of 10-17, and they love to express themselves through writing, don't miss out on the chance to be a part of the weekly Collecting Commas Writing Club at your Main Library.  Meeting every Thursday afternoon at 4:30PM, this group meets to hone their creative writing skills in all forms of writing.  Plus, we make writing fun by engaging in a host of fun activities to help inspire ideas and participation among participants.  There's no need to register to be a part of this club, simply come check out a meeting and see if it's meant for you.

It's February, and we all what that means. It's the month of love! Although Valentine's Day is gone, we're going to show you how to make a tasty sweet craft that's great as a decoration, or to give to that special someone you know. For this month's Teen Time, we're going to supply all the materials needed to show you how to make your own Chocolate Bouquets using Hershey kisses, tissue paper, and few additional materials.  They look awesome, and it's a sweet gift to give to someone.  Don't miss out, and for additional information, contact Jessica Reyes at 325-698-7565.  Plus, stick around after Teen Time and attend the after hours Teen Flix movie night.  Two teen events in one night!

Teens are invited out to our Teen Flix After Hours Movie Night, and in February, we'll be showing a disaster flick starring Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton.  In this film, an expert in volcanoes arrives at a countryside town recently named the second most desirable place to live in America and discovers that the long dormant volcano, Dante's Peak, may wake up at any moment. This film is rated PG-13 for disaster related peril and gore. We'll start the movie at 6:00PM and it runs in at an hour and 48 minutes. Rides should arrive for pickup by 7:45PM. Snacks will be provided so don't miss out on the teen movie night fun.

Teen Scene After Hours: Twisted Games

We love doing after hours teen programming at your library, and the response for them have been great with local teens. We love board games as much as the next person, but we decided to step it up a notch for this event.  If you have a teen that loves the unusual, classic games with a twist, and more, then you'll love this event. Come join us for an evening of live action games, twisted versions of classics, and more! The event will last until 7:30PM, when the doors will open for the parents to come pick them up. All teens must be picked up no later than 7:45PM.

The entire family is invited to come out and join us for a free movie showing of a live-action Disney film.  This month, will be showing a live-action Disney flick starring Lily James and Cate Blanchett.  In this film, when her father unexpectedly passes away, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her scheming step-sisters.  Never one to give up hope, Ella's fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger.  This film is rated PG for mild thematic elements and has a run time of 1 hour and 45 minutes.
