We live in a world where access to technology is commonplace. As more people acquire smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices, there can be a learning curve when it comes to being comfortable using them. If you need help learning to use your device, getting started on the library's great lineup of digital services, maneuvering your way through the Internet or Microsoft Office applications, join us for Tech Monday Instruction at your library. Your South Branch librarians will be on hand to help patrons on a first-come, first-served basis in the meeting room.

Family Fun: Sweet Emotions

Come and join us for this month's Family Fun event at your Main Library. February is a month filled with emotions...some sweet and some not so sweet. Join us as we learn about all the different emotions we sometimes have. We will have stories, crafts, and games designed for kids of all ages, as well as the entire family.

Legos Galore

Youth, ages 8-12, are invited out to our monthly evening Lego Club at your Mockingbird Branch.  Join us in the activity room as we'll supply a host of Lego platforms and pieces to have you work on various projects solo, or team up with others to build something truly amazing.  Free design, or work on a specific type of project, just come out ready to have some fun...and bring your creativity too.


The Investing Universe: A Class for Individual Investors

The South Branch Library is proud to partner with Paul Anthony Thomas, Asset Manager with Custom Private Equity, to offer a series of investing workshops titled “The Investing Universe: A Class for Individual Investors.”  Also sponsored by Gayla Fullerton, CPA, six courses will be hosted on Monday evening starting February 20 and running through March 27.  Each event will begin at 6:30PM and is open to the public covering basic investing and discussions of asset classes and investing techniques.  This event is open to the public and will help to strengthen your investing skills to maximize your efforts.
 

Storytime at Chick-fil-A

Join your South Branch Library staff for stories and fun at one of your local Chick-fil-A.  We're partnering with our friends in the mall to be able to take our storytimes out of the library and to you.  Come out and enjoy stories and fun, plus, get the chance to check out library books and register for library cards at the restaurant.  Come and check it out, then grab lunch when we're done.

Teen Flix

Teens are invited to join us at the Main Library for the next session of Teen Flix, now at a new time at 4:30PM after school. For February, the featured flick will be a great action film from 1981 and starring Harrison Ford in the role of Indiana Jones.  In this movie, he embarks on an adventure to find The Ark of the Covenant before it falls in the wrong hands.  This film is rated PG, but could probably be adjusted to PG-13 by today's standards, and has a run time of 1 hour and 55 minutes. 

Wedding University Workshop

Join your South Branch Library for the first in a 6-part series of workshops to help you plan your perfect wedding.  Danny Snook, and his wife Vera, own the Meadows Wedding Venue in Clyde, TX, and they have over 30 years of experience in wedding photography and planning weddings.  They will be available at your library to provide you with all the information you need on making your wedding day one of the most memorable events of your lives.  In the first session, guests will learn about selecting the perfect location, wedding planners, choosing your attire, selecting wedding rings, and more.  Future sessions will cover cakes and catering, ceremony details, and host of other times.  If you'd like to participate, we ask that you call and register at 325-698-7565. 

Identity Theft & You

Learning how to protect yourself online, and in person, is important in this day and age.  If you want to learn how best to protect your identity from being stolen, you'll certainly want to attend this free workshop at your Mockingbird Branch Library, led by Steve Abel with the Better Business Bureau.  Get the facts you need, from a local expert, and keep your identity protected as best you can. 

Free Tax Help

If you need help filing your taxes, take part in this free program led by IRS-trained volunteers with the AARP.  Multiple sessions will be hosted each week, and guests will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis while spaces allow.  Be sure to bring your Photo ID, social security card, W-2’s, and all other tax information you may need to file.  Volunteers will be on hand to walk you through the filing process, and e-File your taxes during your visit.

Super Storytime: Bear Jamboree

Kids and parents are invited out to the South Branch Library's Super Storytime event, designed as an enhanced storytime activity featuring great stories, songs, crafts, and more. For February, we'll have a "Bear Jamboree" that will be all about bears of course. Come out and enjoy coloring pages, bear stories, songs, and even get the chance to make your own set of binocular crafts to possibly search for bears in the library. It's going to be tons of fun, so don't miss out!

Collecting Commas Writing Club

If you have a child between the ages of 10-17, and they love to express themselves through writing, don't miss out on the chance to be a part of the weekly Collecting Commas Writing Club at your Main Library.  Meeting every Thursday afternoon at 4:30PM, this group meets to hone their creative writing skills in all forms of writing including novels, short stories, poetry, and more.  Plus, we make writing fun by engaging in a host of fun activities to help inspire ideas and participation among participants.  There's no need to register to be a part of this club, simply come check out a meeting and see if it's meant for you.  For more information about this weekly program, contact Amanda Sasser at 325-676-6067.

MCEC's Morning Storytime: "You Are My I Love You"

Kids and parents are invited to join us for a great morning storytime event led by the Military Child Education Coalition. Meeting on the fourth Friday mornings of each month, they'll be on hand to present a great program for families to enjoy. In February, the featured book will be "You Are My I Love You" by Maryann Cusimano Love, which is an ode to the love shared between a parent and a child. Feel free to drop in and be a part of this event designed for kids of all ages.


Self-Defense with the Abilene FIGHT CLUB

The South Branch Library is proud to host the Abilene FIGHT CLUB with instructional classes for various ages.  Instructors will be on hand and showing participants the benefits of their organization, which are respect, self-confidence, self-discipline, and most important, the five razor sharp focuses to make better grades in school.  This event will be sectioned off throughout the day, to focus on instruction for various age groups.  Kids, ages 4-6 may come out to learn some skills from 11:30-12:15, then youth ages 7-12 will receive training from 12:30-1:15, and a final session will be hosted for teens and adults ages 13 and older from 1:30-2:15.  Plus, during the adult class, participants will learn some practical defense and mugging self-defense too
