Today is the first weekday of Spring Break; that pause in the routine beloved of school children, and perhaps dreaded a bit by parents. Family vacations are often planned, but occasionally it's a 'staycation.' In that case, or if parents have to work, it can be a challenge to find things to keep your kids engaged and not bored during what for them can seem a long vacation. Your Abilene Public Library can help with programs and activities at all our locations for all ages, although this article will focus on what's offered at the Mockingbird Branch, 1326 N. Mockingbird Ln.
Today, we offer our regular Movies @ Mockingbird for the entire family, beginning at 2:30PM. Today's comedy from 2016 stars George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill, and a wonderful ensemble cast set in the Golden Age of Hollywood. A superstar actor is kidnapped and held for ransom, so a studio 'fixer' is dispatched to pay up and find the star before the gossip columnists make a field day out of it all - and as you might imagine, hijinks ensue.
Or perhaps you've wanted to put in a garden, but weren't sure how to begin. Tonight at 6:00PM, our Community Garden Fair hosts Farmer Josh from Hug a Root Family Farms and Bob Cheatham with Highland Church Community Garden will be on hand to answer all your questions so you and your family can begin to enjoy the fun and benefits of healthy fruits & vegetables as part of a family's diet and regular eating habits.
Tomorrow, March 14, Join us for Minecraft Mania! at 3:30PM. Tweens and teens can enjoy this popular game and other Minecraft related activities during this session just for them.
On Wednesday, a popular program for children is our "Read to a Dog" session, where reluctant readers can cuddle up next to a furry friend who won't be judgmental about how they read. These tail waggin' tutors will encourage the kids - they're great listeners! Another benefit is that reading skills can be supported even though school isn't in session.
On Thursday, our Family Fun program begins at 4:00PM and is all about a kid favorite - sharks! "Hark! A Shark!" lets everyone learn fun shark facts, read some fishy books, and design a shark from newspaper to take home. Ms Darla will read "Clark the Shark" by Bruce Hale. Clark loves life but sometimes gets into trouble, particularly at Theodore Roosterfish Elementary. His enthusiasm for life is large and often gets him into trouble. With a little help from his friends, Clark learns about his "indoor voice" and how to have fun with friends while at school.
Our second book is another fishy tale entitled "Gilbert the Great" by Jane Clarke and Charles Fuge. Gilbert and Raymond are the best of friends, always swimming together and playing in the ocean. However, as summer approaches Raymond and his family are set to move to another part of the ocean. What will Gilbert do?
Of course, our regular storytimes will be going on during Spring Break, so if you have any questions about any of our activities, please call us at 325-437-7323. You can check our program schedule, as well as those at the other branches online. We hope to see you at one of our programs, and hope you'll include the Abilene Public Library in your Spring Break plans.
