We live in a world where access to technology is commonplace with the abundance of laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other devices. If you need help learning to use your device, getting started on the library's great lineup of digital services, maneuvering your way through the Internet or Microsoft Office applications, join us for Tech Monday Instruction at your library. Your South Branch tech gurus will be on hand to help patrons on a first-come, first-served basis in the meeting room. Don't pass up on 1-on-1 instruction to answer your specific technology questions. For more in-depth help, we may also schedule an additional session to provide more help outside of these events.

Mockingbird Movies

If you're looking to catch a great movie at your library, you won't want to pass up on the next Mockingbird Movies showing where the featured flick will be 2016's "Hail, Caesar!" starring an ensemble cast including Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, and a host of additional actors. In this comedy/mystery, it follows a day in the life of Eddie Mannix, a Hollywood fixer for Capitol Pictures in the 1950s, who cleans up and solves problems for big names in the industry. But when studio star Baird Whitlock disappears, Mannix has to deal with more than just the fix.  This film is rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and smoking, and it has a run time of 1 hour and 46 minutes.

Science Club

If you have child that loves science and getting hands-on with experiments, you'll certainly want to look at being a part of the Science Club at your Main Library.  Each month we meetup to learn about a new science concept, and then we'll perform safe experiments, and watch demonstrations, so that you can see that science concept in motion.  There's no need to register, simply come out ready to have some educational fun.

Make & Take: Butterflies

Kids won't want to miss out on the next Make & Take event at the Main Library as we'll be creating butterflies to help celebrate spring!  Starting with a toilet paper roll and colorful paper, we'll choose from different patterned wings to glue onto the butterfly body, then add some antennae and googly eyes. All colors can be mixed and matched to create a butterfly that's unique to you, and we'll supply all the materials needed.

Community Garden Fair!

Hug a Root Family Farms and possible other community garden groups will be on hand for this unique program at your Mockingbird Branch Library.  Have you ever thought about planting a garden, but didn't know where to start?  Do you have an interest in growing fruits and vegetables for your family?  Join your library and meet local gardeners, learn a few skills, and find out about volunteer opportunities near you.

The Investing Universe: A Class for Individual Investors

The South Branch Library is proud to partner with Paul Anthony Thomas, Asset Manager with Custom Private Equity, to offer a series of investing workshops titled “The Investing Universe: A Class for Individual Investors.”  Also sponsored by Gayla Fullerton, CPA, six courses will be hosted on Monday evening starting February 13 and running through March 27.  Each event will begin at 6:30PM and is open to the public covering basic investing and discussions of asset classes and investing techniques.  This event is open to the public and will help to strengthen your investing skills to maximize your efforts. 



Minecraft Mania

Creepers beware...Minecraft is coming at your Mockingbird Branch Library.  In this program, we'll have laptops available in our Activity Room for tweens & teens for game play in story mode. For those wanting to play, or have finished playing, stick around and we'll have some cool Minecraft activities on hand that don't require the use of a laptop to have fun. Grab your digital pickaxe and join us. 



Make & Take and More: Dr. Seuss

Kids of all ages, and parents too, are invited out to a special Make & Take event hosted during Spring Break at your South Branch Library. Join us as we celebrate Dr. Seuss with making some fun crafts, plus, we'll also be watching the 2012 adaptation of one of his stories, "The Lorax," with the voices of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito. In this film, a 12-year-old boy searches for one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. This film is rated PG brief mild language and has a run time of 1 hour and 26 minutes.  We'll supply all materials for making the Dr. Seuss craft, and light snacks will be provided for the movie.


Step Parenting: Do's & Don'ts

In today’s society, almost 50% of children of all ages are in step families, and that statistic continues to grow.  At times, step parents feel they are on a boat or ship without paddles.  If you find yourselves in similar situations, you’re invited to attend this free workshop led by Dr. Marc Orner, a licensed marriage & family therapist.  Dr. Orner will be on hand to discuss ways to right the ship and learn positive actions to improve interaction with families.  We’ll also discussion practical suggestions and have a discussion on the four different parenting style.  Everyone is invited to join us, and for additional information, contact Tremain Jackson at 325-698-7565.


Free Tax Assistance

If you need help filing your taxes, take part in this free program led by IRS-trained volunteers with the AARP.  Multiple sessions will be hosted each week, and guests will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis while spaces allow.  Be sure to bring your Photo ID, social security card, W-2’s, and all other tax information you may need to file.  Volunteers will be on hand to walk you through the filing process, and e-File your taxes during your visit. 



Read to a Dog Day

Join the Tail Waggin' Tutors at the Mockingbird Branch Library as they bring out their furry, four-legged registered pat therapy dogs for kids to meet and enjoy! This program is designed to offer a stress free zone for kids to practice their reading skills by reading to some dogs in the library. We'll have a selection of books for kids to choose from, and everyone who wants to read to a dog will certainly have the opportunity to do so. Please Note: Although we will have dogs on site, we do ask that you leave your own four-legged friends at home.



Minecraft Mania

Teens and tweens are invited out to our afternoon gaming session at the library playing Minecraft and making some awesome Minecraft-inspired crafts.  Everyone who wants to play will get the chance, and we'll setup 20-minute gaming slots for guests to signup. This activity is designed for ages 10-19.



Family Fun: Hark! A Shark!

Kids of all ages are invited to join us for our monthly Family Fun event at your Mockingbird Branch Library. For March, we're celebrating SHARKS!!! Whether they're friendly or scary, you'll enjoy the sharks we'll share at this activity as we'll highlight a number of great children's books, sing songs, and even make some cool shark crafts that you can take home with you. All materials will be supplied.



Collecting Commas Writing Club

If you have a young writer between the ages of 10-17, don't miss out on the chance to be a part of the weekly Collecting Commas Writing Club at your Main Library.  Meeting every Thursday afternoon at 4:30PM, this group works toward honing their creative writing skills in all forms of writing including novels, short stories, poetry, and more.  There's no need to register, simply come check out a meeting and see if it's meant for you. 



Night Flix

We're adding an additional movie night at your South Branch Library, targeting the adult audience. Join us on the third Thursday evenings for Night Flix. In March, we'll be watching 2016's "Deepwater Horizon" starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, and Kate Hudson.  IN this film, based on true events, you'll get a dramatization of the April 2010 disaster, when the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and created the worst oil spill in U.S. history. This film is rated PG-13 for prolonged intense disaster sequences and related disturbing images and has a run time of 1` hour and 57 minutes. Light snacks will be provided, or feel free to bring your own.


Cover-to-Cover Book Club

Adults who love to read make up the Cover-to-Cover Book Club. They select their own books to read and discuss for each month's meeting. In February, the discussion will be on "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown. Reviewers call the novel "the kind of nonfiction book that reads like a novel." Centered around the life of Joe Rantz - a farmboy from the Pacific Northwest who was literally abandoned as a child - and set during the Great Depression, the "Boys in the Boat" is a character-driven story with a natural crescendo that will have you racing to the finish line.

Meet Belle at Your Library

Join your South Branch Library for a special event as we receive a visit from Disney Princess Belle, just in time for the release of her live action feature film "Beauty and the Beast."  Belle, and maybe some of her Princess Friends, will visit the library to entertain children, do dramatic readings, have a meet & greet, be available for photo ops and more on Friday and Saturday.  If you're looking for a great Spring Break event to get involved in next week, this is it.  Feel free to come dressed as your favorite Disney princess or character and join us for the fun.  This event is being made possible thanks to our AMAZING friends at Characters for Kiddo's so don't miss your opportunity to be a part of the Disney magic at your library.  For additional information, contact Alyssa Crow at 325-698-7565.

If you're a teen looking for something to do, don't pass up on the third Friday nights at your South Branch Library. You're invited to join us this month for our Teen Time event where we'll supply all the materials to show you how to make some awesome Galaxy Cookies. With a few simple materials, which we'll supply of course, we'll show you how to make this edible craft. Plus, stick around afterwards and join us for our Teen Flix After Hours session as we host great movies, just for teens, after the library has closed.

Teens are invited out to our Teen Flix After Hours Movie Night where we host a great lineup of popular movies after the library has closed to the public. For March, we'll be showing a great sci-fi action/fantasy flick, based on a popular young adult series of books by Pittacus Lore titled "I Am Number Four." In this film, aliens and their guardians are hiding on Earth from intergalactic bounty hunters. They can only be killed in numerical order, and Number Four is next on the list. This is his story. This film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and for language. We'll start the movie at 6:00PM and it runs in at an hour and 49 minutes. Rides should arrive for pickup by 7:50PM. Snacks will be provided so don't miss out on the teen movie night fun.


Teen Scene After Hours: Karaoke Kraze

We love doing our after hours teen programs at the Main Library. We decided to embrace our inner singers (or wailers if you can't really sing) this time around. We'll bring in some awesome karaoke games from the PS3 with hip, popular songs to rock out to. Maybe we'll even drag out the Dance Dance Revolution. Of course, besides singing, we'll have the opportunity for socializing and enjoying light snacks. All teens must be picked up no later than 7:45PM.


Family Flix

Join us for a great family friendly movie at your library.  For this month, we'll be showing 2016's "The Jungle Book," as a recent live-action adaptation of the Disney story we all love.  In this film, after a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self-discovery with the help of panther, Bagheera, and free-spirited bear, Baloo.  This film is rated PG for some sequences of scary action and peril and has a run time of 1 hour and 46 minutes.  Popcorn and lemonade will be served (while supplies last).
