Holiday Closing: Easter

Tech Monday Instruction

If you need help learning to use your device, getting started on the library’s great lineup of digital services, maneuvering your way through the Internet or Microsoft Office applications, join us for Tech Monday Instruction at your library.  Your South Branch librarians will be on hand to help patrons on a first-come, first-served basis in the meeting room.  Don’t pass up on 1-on-1 instruction to answer your specific technology questions.

Family Fun: We're Going on a Bug Hunt

The entire family is invited to join us for this month's Family Fun event at your Main Library.  At this session, if you like bugs as much as we do, then come out out to the library for Bugs Galore.  We will have stories, crafts, games, and event a light snack, for all kids to come out and enjoy in this popular afternoon activity.

Your South Branch Library will be hosting a great morning storytime event for kids of all ages, and parents too, at your Chick-fil-A location inside the Mall of Abilene.  Join our children's librarian for great stories, songs, and possibly even a craft in a great partnership with have with our friends at Chick-fil-A. Come for the stories, then stick around to have lunch. It's a great way to spend a morning with your library. 

Teen Flix

Teens are invited out to join us for a great afternoon movie showing of the seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise with 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakensi" starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Adam Driver.  In this film, set three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises.  The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.  This film is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence and has a run time of 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Join your South Branch Library for the next workshop in the Wedding University series led by Danny & Vera Snook, owners of the Meadows Wedding Venue in Clyde, TX. Last month we learned about cakes, catering, and photography, and at this next session, we're discussing ceremony details, selecting a DJ, setting up some photo booth fun, videography, and more. A lot goes into planning a perfect wedding, and if you need help in getting started, this is a great workshop to be a part of. If you're interested in attended, be sure to call us at 325-698-7565 to register. This will help ensure we have enough materials for everyone who wishes to participate. Come with your questions, be prepared to take some notes, and work your way towards becoming a graduate of Wedding University at your library.

Morning Mingle: Coloring Club

Adults are invited to join us for a great Morning Mingle event at your South Branch Library, offering morning activities to get involved in at your library. For this session, you're welcome to join us for a relaxing morning of coloring your stress and cares away.  Coloring is great for giving you the time to take a break from your hectic lives, relieve some stress, and have a little fun without any rules to follow. Come meet new people, make new friends, and enjoy yourself at this great event. We'll provide coloring sheets (a variety of different ones), crayons, colored pencils, and markers...plus light snacks too.

Senior Spotlight: Local Resources Just for You

The Area Agency on Aging of West Central Texas is our host for this great class just for seniors. If you've retired recently, are thinking about moving and needing help, or needing assistance with meals or transportation to doctor appointments (or know someone who does), this is the program for you! Join us for a short class on all the many free resources available to seniors here in Abilene. 

Minecraft Mania

Tweens and teens, ages 8-18, are invited to come out and join us for an afternoon of digital gaming fun at your Main Library.  We'll supply a host of laptops for participants to play Minecraft on in story mode, and for those waiting to play, we'll also have some Minecraft-inspired crafts to take part in.  This is a popular gaming series for youth so you wont' want to miss out. 

Family Fun: Good Night, Sleep Tight

Collecting Commas Writing Club

If you have a young writer between the ages of 10-17, don't miss out on the chance to be a part of the weekly Collecting Commas Writing Club at your Main Library.  Meeting every Thursday afternoon at 4:30PM, this group works toward honing their creative writing skills in all forms of writing including novels, short stories, poetry, and more.  There's no need to register, simply come check out a meeting and see if it's meant for you.

Adults are invited to join us for a great movie night at your library, where we watch popular flicks from a wide range of genres. In April, we'll be watching 2016's "Sully," starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, and Laura Linney, based on a true story. In this film, watch the story of Chesley Sullenberger, the American pilot who became a hero after landing his damaged plane on the Hudson River in order to save the flight's passengers and crew. The film is rated PG-13 for some peril and brief strong language and has a run time of 1 hour and 36 minutes. Light snacks will be provide, or feel free to bring your own.

The Texas Tech University Small Business Development Center has knowledgeable staff to help you walk through the process so you can begin your business legally and with the assurance you have accurate information. Join staff from the SBDC at a free, informational program open to all and learn more about our resources for local businesses.

If you're an avid reader in the community, we invite you to be a part of our Cover-to-Cover Book Club at your Main Library.  Each month we meet up to discuss a host of great books covering all genres.  For April, the featured book selection will be "The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper" by Phaedra Patrick, and we invite you to checkout a copy of this book from your local library, then come ready to discuss at this meeting. 

Teen Flix After Hours

Teens are invited out to our Teen Flix After Hours Movie Night where we host a great lineup of popular movies after the library has closed to the public. It's all about the Marvel Cinematic Universe for this month as we're watching 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy" starring Chris Pratt...as the sequel will be released next month to continue on in their adventures. In this film, a group of intergalactic criminals are forced to work together to stop a fanatical warrior from taking control of the universe. This film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language. We'll start the movie at 6:00PM and it runs in at 2 hours. Rides should arrive for pickup by 8:00PM.

Big Day Downtown

Big Day Downtown is a great community event offering a day of fun, food, music, sidewalk sales and more for the entire family to come out and support.  Join in on live music, craft vendors, food trucks, and special deals & sidewalk sales as you peruse the streets of Downtown Abilene.  While you're out and about, feel free to stop by your Main Library where kids will have the opportunity to make some great craft projects during this time. 

Legos Galore

School-aged children are invited to come out to your Mockingbird Branch Library and join us for our monthly Legos Galore program.  We'll supply all the Lego pieces necessary for youth to build whatever they can imagine.  Whether working independently, or as a group, we'll spend the first 45-minutes of the program building our projects, then take the last 5-10 minutes to see what everyone created.  At times we'll free design, other times we may have themes for you to build in, but at all times, you can expect to have fun.

Be a part of a second Saturday Matinee movie showing at your South Branch Library with a lineup of great hits geared towards the teen and adult audiences. In April, we'll be watching 2016's "Suicide Squad" starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and others as they tackle the roles of some of DC Comics' most well-known super-villains. In this film, a secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse. This film is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content, and language and has a run time of 2 hours and 3 minutes.

Everyone is invited to join us for a great movie showing at your Mockingbird Branch Library, with a film we all love, and let's face it, we all wanted to re-create that final dance number.  We'll be showing 1987's "Dirty Dancing" starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.  In this film, spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances "Baby" Houseman falls in love with the camp's dance instructor, Johnny Castle.  This film is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.
