Book-to-Flix

Join your South Branch Library for a monthly movie night focusing on popular literature that was adapted to hit featured films in our Sunday Book-to-Flix program. In April, the featured flick will be 2007's "The Mist," starring Thomas Jane and Laurie Holden, written and directed by Frank Darabont, the man behind the smash hit "The Walking Dead" on AMC. Based on the novella of the same name by Stephen King, in this film, a freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. This film is rated R for violence, terror, gore, and language, and has a run time of 2 hours and 6 minutes. Popcorn and drinks will be provided, or feel free to bring your own snacks.

Texas Author Series Featuring Mike Cox

The community is invited to participate in these free events. The final session will feature Mike Cox who will be on hand to discuss his book titled "Texas Disasters: True Stories of Tragedy and Survival."  Cox is a native Texan and has written 21 nonfiction books. As a prolific Texas author and historian, he was also the 2010 recipient of the A.C. Greene Award from the West Texas Book Festival. Since 2000, he has written a syndicated weekly newspaper column called "Texas Tales" and he also appears in a number of national and statewide magazines. Cox is an elected member of the Texas Institute of Letters and has won numerous journalism awards over the years. Each program lasts about an hour and copies of the authors' books will be available for purchase and signing. For sessions hosted at the Main Library, feel free to bring your lunch, or purchase one from the Friends at the event.

Tech Monday Instruction

If you need help learning to use your device, getting started on the library's great lineup of digital services, maneuvering your way through the Internet or Microsoft Office applications, join us for Tech Monday Instruction at your library. Your South Branch librarians will be on hand to help patrons on a first-come, first-served basis in the meeting room. Don't pass up on 1-on-1 instruction to answer your specific technology questions.

Minecraft Mania

We want you to be a part of the Minecraft Mania fun at your Abilene Public Library, with multiple sessions hosted across all three branches! Designed for tweens and teens (ages 8-18), join your South Branch Library on the fourth Tuesday afternoons of each month as we dive into the digital world of Minecraft.  We'll provide access to laptops for gamers to play in story mode, while also offering some additional Minecraft-themed activities and crafts to get involved in.  So come on out, bring a friend, and make some new ones at this digital series of events at your library.

Mockingbird Nights

Mockingbird Nights is a new program for the 18+ crowd.  Each month we'll have a different event planned and for our first event, we'll be watching the cult classic musical Little Shop of Horrors.  Obviously, singing along will be encouraged, and feel free to come dressed in your favorite 60's attire.  In this film, starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene, a nerdy florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed.  This film is rated PG-13 for mature thematic materials including comic horror violence, substance abuse, language, and sex references, and has a run time of 1 hour and 34 minutes.

Teen Time: Beauty and the Beast Roses

If you caught the new Beauty and the Beast flick, come out and celebrate at your Mockingbird Branch Library as teens will have the chance to make some cool roses out of a variety of materials.  We will show you a few new methods for this craft as old as time.  Also, while we craft we'll be watching music videos from the original Disney animated version of the film.

Collecting Commas Writing Club

If you have a young writer between the ages of 10-17, don't miss out on the chance to be a part of the weekly Collecting Commas Writing Club at your Main Library.  Meeting every Thursday afternoon at 4:30PM, this group works toward honing their creative writing skills in all forms of writing including novels, short stories, poetry, and more.  There's no need to register, simply come check out a meeting and see if it's meant for you.

MCEC Morning Storytime

Kids and parents are invited to join us for a great morning storytime event led by the Military Child Education Coalition. Join your South Branch Library on the fourth Friday mornings of each month for a great activity designed for kids and parents to enjoy. In April, the featured book will be Eve Bunting's "Flower Garden." In this book, you'll follow the progress of a little girl and her father as they purchase a garden and board the bus to carry it home. Feel free to drop in and be a part of this event designed for kids of all ages.

Teen Scene After Hours: Supernatural Fan Party

We love doing our after hours teen programming at your library, and this month, we've decided to embrace our inner Sam and Dean.  We'll put a Supernatural twist on some favorite games...be prepared to answer trivia questions, and there will even be a costume contest.  We'll have the opportunity for socializing and enjoying light snacks as well.  So if you're a fan of this popular TV series, you'll certainly want to attend this Teen Scene After Hours event at your Main Library.  All teens must be picked up no later than 7:45PM and all materials will be provided free of cost.

Kids and parents are invited to join us at your Main Library for another great afternoon movie showing that you're sure to love.  This month, our featured movie will be 2016's "Moana" with the voices of Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, and Rachel House.  In this film, set in Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches an impetuous Chieftain's daughter's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.  This film is rated PG for peril, some scary images, and brief thematic elements, and has a run time of 1 hour and 47 minutes.
