Summer has arrived and the staff at your Abilene Public Library is putting the finishing touches on the summer programs. There will be reading clubs for all ages as well as storytimes, special programs, and our ever-popular Young Audiences shows.
Summer Reading Clubs are a time-honored way of keeping kids involved with books while they are away from school as well as challenging our adult readers to read. This year's reading club for all ages is "Build a Better World," highlighting books and activities that make the world a better place for all, whether through environmental activism, creative construction, artistic expression, or a variety of other activities.
All reading club participants will receive a tote bag stuffed with age-appropriate material (while supplies last). Bags for kids ages 0-12 will include a bookmark, a sticker, and a reading log. Read 10 books and attend four programs during the summer and get an invitation to a special end-of-summer blowout celebration.

The Teen Reading Club is for teens who have completed the 6th through 12th grades. Their bags will include a bookmark, a YA book, and some raffle tickets. For each book read or each teen program attended, teens can fill out one raffle ticket. Tickets will go into the weekly drawings for some great prizes. All tickets will then be put into the drawing for the grand prize at the end of the summer.
Of course we can't forget the adults! Their bag will also include a bookmark and some raffle tickets. Read a book or attend an adult program to get entries into the weekly prize drawings. As with the teens, there will also be a chance to win the grand prize at the end of summer.
Summer programs at the library are always a big hit. All three library locations will have activities for all ages. Our normal storytime programs for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children will continue through the summer. There will also be special visitors including a firefighter, a policeman, a meteorologist, a pastry chef, and more! The library will also be participating in the 6th Annual CALF (Children's Art and Literacy Festival) in June.

The Main Library will again play host to four Young Audience programs this summer. On June 13th., actress and storyteller Bernadette Nason, will entertain everyone with her program called "Show and Tell." On June 27th, Le Theatre de Marionette will bring us the lost art of Marionette Puppetry performing a cabaret-style show. Joe McDermott makes a return appearance on July 11th. McDermott was a hit last year with is energy musical show and we are looking forward to hearing some new things from him. Rounding out the summer Young Audience lineup is the Hampstead Stage Company on July 25th. Based on the classic stories of Beauty and the Beast and Pinocchio, these shows will be an unforgettable experience. Young Audience shows are geared for ages 7 and up.
Mockingbird Branch will play host to a special musical guest on June 24th. Will Parker will be presenting his show "Music for Kids, 1-100." It promises to be fun for the entire family.
