TECH Time

As more people acquire smartphones, tablets, and laptops, you may find yourself needing a little help.  Be it learning our digital services, getting started on PCs, learning Microsoft Office, and more, join us for TECH (Technology Enrichment & Collaborative Help) Time at your library.  Sessions will be hosted twice a week on Mondays at the South Branch Library and Thursdays at the Main Library from 2:00PM to 4:00PM.  Sessions will be provided by the library’s Technology/Social Media Manager and the Multimedia Marketing Assistant.  We may not have all the answers, but we’ll certainly be on hand to assist you and help in some way.  Guests will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis and limited to 30-minutes if others are waiting.

Zoo Lady Visit with Joy Harsh

Youth are invited to come out to a fun and educational event as we invite in Joy Harsh (Educational Curator at the Abilene Zoo) and her animal ambassadors for a Zoo Lady Visit. During these sessions, Harsh will bring out wonderful animals from the zoo to teach kids about them. Not only will you get to meet them, but you'll even get the opportunity to touch some of them at the end of the program. Don't miss out on this popular summer series at your library.

Tween Time: Tape Sculptures

Science Club for Youth

Youth, ages 8+, are invited to come out to our monthly meeting of the Science Club where we teach youth about science concepts and then perform experiments. We'll supply all the materials needed for any experiment or demonstration; no registration required.

Make & Take: Button Bracelets

Following Science Club at your Main Library, kids of all ages are invited to drop by for the monthly Make & Take crafting session. This month we'll be making Button Bracelets out of chenille stems and buttons. We'll provide all the materials and instruction needed to show you how to make these cool wrist accessories, you just have to show up for the fun.

Mockingbird Movies: "A Dog's Purpose"

Everyone is invited to join us at your Mockingbird Branch Library for a free movie night as we'll be showing one for all ages with the recent film "A Dog's Purpose," starring Josh Gad and Dennis Quaid. In this movie, based on the popular book, a dog looks to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes and owners. This film is rated PG for thematic elements and some peril and has a run time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Join us for the Young Audiences performance series for the summer at your Main Library.  Designed to be both educational and interactive, these performances are always some of the highlights of each summer at your library.  The first session will feature Bernadette Nason, an award-winning storyteller, actress, and writer who will be sharing her tales with youth in Abilene.  Having been on the Texas Commission on the Arts Texas Touring Roster since 2002, she's been telling her tales annually to over 30,000 students.  Don't miss out on her performance at your library.

Minecraft Mania

Storytime with Local Teen Author

Kids and parents are invited to join the South Branch Library for a special storytime event where we're inviting in Hannah Tollison, a local teen writer, to share her children's book titled "Sally the Sloth Sleeps in School." Teaching kids about the importance of a good night's rest, to be your best in school, this book was written for a writing competition for the Texas Association of Future Educators. After winning regionals, and being the top five entries in the state, Tollison will move on to the national competition competing with other young writers in the Children's Literature K-3 division in the U.S. Tollison will be on hand to read her book (as well as use sign language to present her story) to guests at storytime this morning. We encourage everyone to share in this writer's accomplishments as she heads off to nationals later in June.

Military Brown Bag Series

We invite adults to come out and attend the next Military Brown Bag Series event at your South Branch Library, where we seek to learn more about the Veteran Experience through dialogue. In this session, the topic of discussion will be understanding the transitioning into civilian life. We will start off by watching a brief TED talk video on the subject, and then engage in conversation to fully engage in the topic with others. Whether you have served in the military, or are a civilian, each session is designed to enlighten everyone more. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Master Gardeners at Your Library

The Big Country Master Gardener's Association is a group of local residents who love to learn and teach others about all things gardening. Abilene and surrounding areas offer unique challenges with our soil, precipitation, wind, and sun. Our local chapter is made up of both experienced and novice gardeners, all of whom want to share what they have to offer with the public to benefit our community. Join us for this meet & greet session as we offer great tips for gardening in the Abilene area.

Disney Flix & Crafts: "Maleficent"

Kids and parents are invited out to a new summer series at your South Branch Library where, each Wednesday, we'll feature Disney movies and make fun crafts inspired from the featured flick. Light snacks will be provided too and we'll supply all the materials you'll need for the crafts. This week's featured flick will be the live-action adaptation "Maleficent" starring Angelina Jolie & Elle Fanning.  In this film, a vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess, only to discover that the child may be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.  This film is rated PG for sequences of fantasy action and violence, including frightening images and has a run time of 1 hour and 37 minutes.

Probiotics: Good Health Begins in the Gut

The community is invited out to a free nutrition workshop, at your Main Library, led by Dessire Armstrong. Following in like with the Summer Reading Club of "Build a Better World," this workshop will show you how to build a better you through what you eat.  Armstrong states, "your gut bacteria influence every part of your body works: how easily you lose (or gain) weight, how your immune system functions, even your ability to focus." Come out ready to learn from a local professional in the community.

Family Fun: Gardening Fun! Nature's Art

Collecting Commas Writing Club

For young adults ages 10–17, here’s a chance to improve your creative writing skills with no pressure or stress.  This weekly writing club will give young writers the opportunity to write poems, short stories, plays, or even a continuous work like a novel.  We participate in group writing activities, such as “pick a prompt” from a hat that everyone came up with, or collaborative writing and maybe even perform a play, or put on a poetry slam.  We will go over the basics of writing, and how to build up your writing.

Adults are invited out to a great evening movie showing at your South Branch Library. This month we'll be showing 2015's "Truth" starring an ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, and Dennis Quaid. In this film, it portrays the newsroom drama detailing the 2004 CBS 60 Minutes report investigating then-President George W. Bush's military service, and the subsequent firestorm of criticism that cost anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes their careers. This film is rated R for language and a brief nude photo and has a run time of 2 hours and 5 minutes. Light snacks will be served, or feel free to bring your own.

Grandparent & Me Craft Time: Birdfeeders

Your South Branch Library invites kids of all ages to come out to the next "Who I Could Be..." series, where we learn about different careers from professionals in the community. At this session, we'll be meeting an Abilene Police Officer to learn about what they do for Abilene. You never know, we may just have some youth in the community interested in becoming an officer when they grow up.

Teen Flix After Hours: "Stardust"

Teens are invited out to our popular After Hours Movie Night at your South Branch Library, where the doors lock at 6:00PM and then we'll settle into the Meeting Room to enjoy popular flicks with teen appeal. For this month we'll be watching 2007's "Stardust" starring Claire Danes & Michelle Pfeiffer in a film adapted from a popular novel by Neil Gaiman. In this movie, in a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm. This film is rated PG-13 for some fantasy violence and risqué humor and has a run time of 2 hours and 7 minutes. Snacks and drinks will be served (or feel free to bring your own) and pickup time for this event will be 8:00PM.

Family Flix: "Balto"

Families are invited out to a free movie showing at your Main Library, and this month's featured flick will be based on true accounts in 1995's "Balto" with the voices of Kevin Bacon and Bob Hoskins. In this film, an outcast half-wolf risks his life to prevent a deadly epidemic from ravaging Nome, Alaska. This film is rated G and has a run time of 1 hour and 18 minutes.
