Each year, the Abilene Public Library is host of a wonderful Summer Reading Club for all ages to encourage children to keep reading through the summer months as well as daring adult readers to broaden their horizons.
We challenged Abilenians to "Build a Better World" in June with the library by highlighting books and activities to further that interest through environmental activism, creative construction, artistic expression, and a great variety of other activities to make the world a better place.
Perhaps you already have found a great new author or revisited some old favorites, learned something interesting, or made new friends. But if you have not picked up your Summer Reading Club packet, there is still time. Just visit any Abilene Public Library location to join the club this summer.
Both our Teen and Adult clubs offer prize drawings throughout the summer, so be sure to write down each book read or program attended on your raffle tickets included in your packet and turn them in for a chance to win great prizes. For our younger readers up to fifth grade, included in your packet is a detailed schedule of events as well as a reading log to keep track of your progress this summer. Make sure you write down the books read, listened to, or shared as well as the programs you have attended on the log.
Once you reach 10 books and four programs, turn in the log at any library location. Make sure your contact information is on your logs, too. By turning in your log, you will have earned a free child zoo ticket (with adult ticket purchase) courtesy of the Abilene Zoo good Aug. 5. Tickets may be picked up from any library location starting July 24.
Everyone who takes part in the Summer Reading Club is invited to the End of Summer Party. Join in the fun on Aug. 5 from 10AM to noon at Grover Nelson Park. There will be come-and-go events with games, races, crafts, bubbles, activities, prizes, and much more. The party also will feature storytimes at 10:30AM and 11:30AM presented by the delightful storytellers from the Abilene Public Library.
Plus, visit the zoo by using the ticket you earned by returning your reading logs. You also can play at Fort Imagination playground and Nelson Splash. Remember to wear your swimsuit and sunblock, and don't forget your chairs and blankets. The zoo will also offer water for sale.
Just look for the tents in the green space near the zoo.
All ages welcome and children must be accompanied by an adult.
Call 325-698-7565 for information. The clubs run through July 29, so there is still time to join in if you haven't already.
Pick up a packet at any library and get to reading! Make sure you turn in your raffle tickets and reading logs before the end of July and we will see you at the End of Summer Party.
