"Job Time: Application Assistance at Mockingbird Branch" | @ the Library Article

Applying for jobs online can be a daunting task.  There are many things to consider, such as finding good job listings, deciding whether to list every past employment opportunity you have had or only the ones that seem to apply to the new job you are going for, and whether uploading a resume and cover letter is necessary.

Your Abilene Public Library is here to help!  Starting September 6, every Wednesday afternoon from 4-6PM, staff at Mockingbird Branch will help you get started in the online job application process.  We are calling it Job Time: Application Assistance and we will be here to help anyone who needs assistance on a first-come, first-served basis.  We'll reserve six computer stations for our free class so that everyone participating can move at their own speed and yet participate as a group memeber.

We can help you locate job postings at websites such as Indeed.com, Monster.com, and Snagajob.com, as well as get you started in the daunting task of filling out an online application.  For those wanting or needing a resume or cover letter, we offer basic Word instruction, or our database Cypress Resume.  Last but not least, we can offer practical advice on what to wear and how to answer basic interview questions you might encounter, as well as Learning Express Library, an interactive online learning platform offering a selection of career-oriented resources, job preparation, information on career changes, and more.  Our online resources can be used at home as well, with a current Abilene Public Library card.

In addition, thanks to a grant from the Texas Book Festival, Mockingbird Branch has established a career and professional development book collection.  We have books in print and online via OverDrive to checkout and read at your own pace.

Our OverDrive eBook collection offers career exploration books, suitable for anyone looking to change careers or discover a new passion.  Titles such as Military to Civilian Success for Veterans, Opportunities in Computer Careers, Careers for Scientific Types & Others with Inquiring Minds, and Opportunities in Hotel and Motel Management check out for two weeks and can easily be downloaded to a tablet or Kindle reading device.  For help on how to access these and other eBooks, phone us at 325-437-7323.

Computer skills are in high demand and books such as Office 2016 Simplified, My Excel 2016, Word 2016, and Microsoft Outlook 2016 might be just the books you need.  Each book has in-depth descriptions of different computer tasks as well as clear step-by-step instructions and pictures.  Whether you are looking for an office environment or simply looking to establish basic computer skills, these books are a great place to start.

While some job postings are still listed in the newspaper, in today's job market most jobs are posted online.  Learning how to create accounts in the new social media job market has quickly become an essential survival skill.  We have many titles to help with that, as well as books on interviewing skills, cover letters, and more.

So if you're in the job market and need help, stop by the Mockingbird Branch of your Abilene Public Library on Wednesday afternoons from 4-6PM for Job Time: Application Assistance.
