Public Library Late Fees a Thing of the Past, Oct. 1

Effective October 1, 2018, late fees for materials you checkout from your Abilene Public Library will be eliminated!  It was voted on by the Abilene City Council on Thursday, September 13 and these fees have been abolished as part of the fiscal year 2019 budget package, which begins in October.  Although we will continue to charge patrons for lost and damaged materials, replacement library cards, and non-resident fees, we will not be charging you for late fees.

For the time being, patrons will still be accountable for any fees acquired on their record prior to Oct. 1, 2018.  We will continue to accept payments of cash, check, or credit/debit cards.  We are currently working on plans to have these charges eliminated as well, but that has not been finalized, so for now, patrons are responsible for previous fees.

Starting October 1 there will still be due dates on all materials you checkout from the library, as normal.  Although late fees will not be charged, your account may be blocked if these titles aren't returned to the library and become long overdue.  At that point, you will not be able to checkout new materials until the outstanding and overdue titles have been returned.  If materials are returned damaged, or are lost, patrons will still be responsible for the replacement costs for these titles.

Removing late fees will be a great move toward removing barriers for all users, allowing more people in our community to return to the library and continue making use of our collection and resources.  This is exciting news for the community, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to get you the answers you need.
