Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 15 years, you've no less heard about the phenomenon of "The Walking Dead." Created as a black-and-white comic book series by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore, it introduced the world to Rick Grimes and his band of followers as they fight for survival during a zombie apocalypse. As an ongoing comic series, it would later give rise to the 2010 hit AMC show of the same name that brought the characters to life in a series that shattered all expectations, received amazing reviews from the critics, and became the highest viewed show of any series in cable television history. If you couldn't tell, I'm somewhat of a fan.
If you couldn't tell, I'm somewhat of a fan, and if you are too, we invite you to take part in The Walking Dead Day celebrations that will be going on at your Mockingbird Branch Library on Saturday, October 13 from 2PM to 4PM. During this time, we'll have a host of themed activities for guests to engage in, and we'll be watching a zombie flick titled "Fido." Additionally, your Main Library will host a trivia game to test your knowledge of this world with the chance of getting some free swag. The trivia will be available throughout the day so you can drop in at any time to participate.
The Walking Dead Day is a new celebration, kicking off its first year in 2018 and developed by Image/Skybound Entertainment to commemorate the series' 15th year of publication. It's a series that's still highly read to this day and continues to satisfy the world of zombie fans out there, much as George A. Romero did when he introduced us to zombies in 1968.
Of course some may scoff at the power of The Walking Dead franchise as being nothing more than another zombie series, it's far from that. Although zombies, referred to as walkers in the series, area a major threat within their post-apocalyptic world, they end up taking a backseat to the real story. More weight is placed on the rich storylines that follow the survivors as they struggle to stay alive in this new world, and do so without completely losing their humanity...even though many others in their land have lost theirs. With compelling characters, an edge-of-your-seat plot, and danger at every turn, fans can't help but to become complete enveloped in the world created by Kirkman.
So join your library in our celebrations by participating in our Walking Dead Day activities at your Mockingbird Branch Library on Saturday, October 13 at 2:00PM, or the Main Library throughout the day. And if you haven't dipped your toes in the waters of this franchise, we also invite you to check out the comics series, TV show, and novels that we carry at your library branches. With so many fans of the series, in all its forms, we can't be that wrong for loving it...right?
